HERITAGE & PLANNING PROJECTS
Wireless Broadband
Superfast Britain is a Government programme of investment in broadband and communication infrastructure across the UK run by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. As part of the delivery programme, the provision of fixed wireless broadband is an alternative broadband solution for rural areas. Currently this solution provides a rural broadband service to areas of Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Wales, Warwickshire, Devon and Somerset. Such technology relies on ‘Line of Sight’, which means that the receiver on a property needs to have a clear view of one of the Airband transmitters. Existing commercial masts and buildings are used wherever possible to maximise re-use, but inevitably some new masts will need to be erected to ensure full coverage. Some locations inevitably have an impact on heritage assets or their settings. Our role was to ensure this potential impact was thoroughly assessed for each new mast via the production of a Heritage Impact Assessment.
Additional Poultry Unit
This Heritage Impact Assessment had been produced in support of an application for consent for the erection of a single poultry unit at a Herefordshire farm, adjacent to existing poultry units. As the unit is visible from nearby listed buildings, Scheduled Ancient Monuments or other heritage assets, the potential impact of the proposals on heritage values was considered.
Student Accommodation
A Heritage Impact Statement has been produced in support of an application for the refurbishment of a former bank in the East Midlands, and the erection of in the grounds of newbuild student accommodation scheme. The scheme comprises accommodation of 75 student rooms in the form of 50 cluster rooms and 25 private studios. The site is within a conservation area and opposite a listed set of pak gates and lodges.
Replacement Development
This Heritage Impact Assessment was produced in support of an application for consent for the demolition of the rear wing of the existing apartment complex and its replacement with a new side wing of apartments. The remaining original structure was to be radically remodelled. As the property is in a conservation area and in proximity to a Grade II* listed building, the potential impact of the proposals on heritage asset values must be considered.
Last Orders for a Closed Pub
As well as being listed Grade II, the property also lies within a conservation area and is located in a prominent position in the village High Street. Closed for 18 months, an application for listed building consent was granted for its conversion to two dwellings.
New Forms of Retailing
A difficult urban site in a conservation area with a listed church and railway viaduct, proposals for retail and commercial uses had to consider the potential impact on the heritage assets
